Richard David Rosin was born on 29th April 1942 in Harare, Zimbabwe( formerly Salisbury, S.Rhodesia). His father was a distinguished doctor and the young Rosin grew up in an atmosphere of medical learning and sports. David (as he would like to be addressed by his friends), excelled in sports and as well as in the classroom of Balkiston Junior School and St.George’s college in Harare, Zimbabwe, where he excelled in football and cricket. He left Zimbabwe in 1960 at the tender age of 18 to pursue his higher studies at The Kings College in London.

He graduated with MBBS degree from The University of London in 1966 and went on to pursue his long time goal of becoming a surgeon. He obtained his FRCS(edin) & FRCS from the Royal college of Surgeons of England in 1971. In December 1978 he was awarded MS( Master of Surgery) by the university of London. The following year he obtained a certificate of higher surgical training in General Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons of England. His excellence in his academic achievements is shown by numerous prizes and scholarships that he won. He won the Class Prize in Medicine, Forensic Medicine Prize, Arthur Evans Memorial Prize in Surgery and the Rogers Prize, University of London. Some of the prestigious scholarships he won are, Ethicon Foundation Scholarships, British Journal of Surgery Travelling Fellow and Hunterian Professor Royal College of Surgeons of England. He worked hard and impressed famous Surgeons of his time such as, Prof. Harold Ellis, Prof. York Mason, Prof. Rodney Smith, Mr. Naunton Morgan and many other reputed surgeons. During this period of academic achievements and training he found time for social life. His other skills led him to marry and produce three lovely children, and raised them in an atmosphere of learning and social obligation. His passion to teach surgery took him on lecture tours to many countries including his birth place, Zimbabwe, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Australia, Caribbean and many states in the USA. Along with Prof. Walrond he was instrumental in organizing the Annual meeting of Royal College of Surgeons of England in Barbados in March 2001. He has also examined undergraduate and post-graduate students in England and the Caribbean.

He is also the President, British Association of Surgical Oncology, Member of Council, Royal Society of Medicine, Member of Intercollegiate Board of Surgical Training and Examinations, Chairman of Working Party to Develop an Intercollegiate MRCS, Member of Working Party on New Curriculum for Basic Surgical Training (Royal College of Surgeons of England) Member of Working Party on Restructuring of Royal College of Surgeons Council, Member of Working Party on Setting of Surgical Standards (Royal College of Surgeons of England), Member of Intercollegiate Committee at Royal College of Physicians on Generic Senior House Officers, Member of Working Party on Regional Representation (Royal College of Surgeon of England), Member of United Examination Board, Worshipful Society of Apothecaries and Royal College of Surgeons, Some of his prestigious previous positions held were, President, British Melanoma Study Group, President, Clinical Section, Royal Society of Medicine, Intercollegiate Specialist Examiner in General Surgery, Hon. Secretary & Vice President to the British Association of Surgical Oncology President of the Section of Surgery,Royal Society of Medicine, President, St Mary’s Hospital Rugby Football Club Chairman, Ethics Committee, Royal Masonic Hospital, Founder & Honorary Secretary, Society of Minimally Invasive General Surgeons, Chairman, Division of Surgery, St Mary’s Hospital, Member of Council, Association of Endoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland. He is a also a member of nineteen prestigious international societies. Dr.Rosin has published more than 90 peer reviewed papers. He has edited or co-edited thirteen books. He has also contributed chapters for more than 30 books. He is an instructor for advanced Laparoscopic procedures and made teaching videos on advanced Laparoscopic procedures for Surgeons.

Dr.Rosin is an astute and well reputed General Surgeon. He has taken special interest in Minimal Access Surgery and is involved in teaching basic and advanced Laparoscopic procedures. In keeping with his passion to teach surgery he has trained numerous Surgeons in this field. He has researched extensively on the history of medicine and has contributed immensely in this very interesting and important topic. Outside of Sport and Surgery Dr.Rosin is very much interested in Opera and Theatre and finds time to relax in these activities. . Dr.Rosin is currently a Consultant in General Surgery/Surgical Oncology & Minimal Access Surgery, St Mary’s Hospital, London.

Dr.Rosin has a fantastic sense of Humor. He has the gift to narrate jokes for any occasion and for any length of time. He has enormous stamina and has withstood the rigors of Caribbean social scene. He has a passion for Rugby, football and Cricket. He is also a keen Golfer and has played in most golf courses in the Caribbean.

Dr.Rosin has a longstanding relationship with the Caribbean, his first visit being in 1976 and the following year to organise the RCS course at The Kingston Hospital, Jamaica. Subsequently he has come to the Caribbean to organize surgical workshops in Barbados and as an external examiner at various campuses of the University of West Indies. During his many visits he has made many friends in the Caribbean. Dr.Rosin has been in constant contact with developing nations in the world and contributed tremendously in advancing surgery in these countries. The Caribbean College of Surgeons, in recognition of Dr.Rosin’s contribution to the advancement of surgery in the Caribbean and the wider world, confers this award of Honorary Fellowship of the College.
